City Of Richmond Provides Financial Support So Children Can Enjoy Recreation Programs

Participating in recreational opportunities is a great way for children to develop their social, intellectual, physical and creative skills.

The City of Richmond offers a Recreation Fee Subsidy Program to support participation of children and youth from families experiencing financial hardship in the many programs and services offered at community centres, swimming pools, ice arenas, and arts and cultural facilities.

  • What is the Recreation Fee Subsidy Program?
This program aims to improve access to parks, recreation and cultural services and programs for those in financial need by providing subsidized registration fees for children and youth from low-income families living in Richmond.
  • Who can apply for a fee subsidy?
This program is for children and youth who live in Richmond. Their family’s total household income needs to be below the Statistics Canada Low Income Cut-Off line. Proof of financial status needs to be provided along with the application form.
  • How do I apply?
For more information and to download the application form visit www.richmond.ca/subsidy. Application forms can also be picked up from any community centre, swimming pool, arena or the Richmond Cultural Centre. Follow the instructions on the form for submitting completed applications.
  • How does the fee subsidy work?
Once approved to receive a subsidy, families will identify recreation programs they would like to register in and work with Accessibility and Inclusion staff to complete the registration. Families can receive one subsidy per child or youth every 3 months for one year, and always pay a portion of the cost of the registration fee. After one year, families may re-apply for the program.
  • What can a fee subsidy be used for?
A fee subsidy can be used to reduce the cost of registering in programs at community centres, arenas, the Richmond Nature Park, and for arts and cultural programs at the Richmond Cultural Centre. It can also be used to reduce the cost of swimming lessons or family swim tickets at Richmond swimming pools. Some restrictions do apply, so feel free to contact Accessibility and Inclusion staff for details.
  • What if I have questions?
Please feel free to contact Accessibility and Inclusion at the City of Richmond: accessibility@richmond.ca or 604-247-4909.
