BC introduces the new Affordable Child Care Benefit

On September 1st, 2018, the Affordable Child Care Benefit (ACCB) will replace the current Child Care Subsidy program. While the new program is very similar to the old Subsidy and application process, there are a few key changes.

On September 1st, 2018, the Affordable Child Care Benefit (ACCB) will replace the current Child Care Subsidy program, which reduced the cost of child care for low-income families. While the new program is very similar to the old Subsidy and application process, there are a few key changes that have been introduced in an effort to decrease the cost of childcare. The ACCB will be able to help more families by extending the income threshold for families to qualify and eventually increase funding for all child care programs.

Notable changes to the ACCB from Subsidy include:

·         CRA consent (required) to review last year’s family income

·         Families earning <$45,000 annually may qualify for full funding

·         Families earning <$111,000 annually may qualify for partial funding

·         Online application process

While Child Care Subsidy served as financial support for low-income families, ACCB expands this program by increasing the income threshold to encapsulate the middle class. Not only will more families qualify, but to offset the rising cost of childcare there will be increased funding for all ages. As part of the initial rollout, funding for infant and toddler programs has increased with plans to continue increases for 3 to 5 care beginning September 2019. To estimate the amount of funding you may qualify for, you can use this online calculator.

Applications for ACCB are now able to be processed online through My Family Services with the added benefit of being mobile browser compatible. This means that you can now use your smartphone or tablet to apply or upload documents in addition to using a computer. With a new dynamic application form, applying for ACCB is streamlined and simplified for ease. To apply, go to My Family Services and create or login to your Basic BCeID.
